Satvik Diet’s Unheard Importance In Yoga

Have you ever seen how your yoga practice is affected by the food you eat? Some foods cause more internal turmoil than others in terms of bloating and other digestive issues. It can be intriguing to observe, nevertheless, how some foods have more subdued effects on your emotions and mental state. The sister science of yoga, Ayurveda, gives us a detailed understanding of how our diets impact our physical and mental health, as well as our spiritual vigor.

What does Ayurveda say about our diet?

Ayurveda teaches us that the Satvik diet, which consists of fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes, plays a crucial role in enhancing our yoga practice. This diet is known for its lightness and purity, promoting clarity of mind and a calm state of being. By nourishing our bodies with Satvik foods, we can experience improved focus, increased energy levels, and a deeper connection to our spiritual selves during yoga sessions.

Every food has a unique flavor (rasa), energy for heating or cooling (virya), and an after-digestive impact. Overcombining these effects might cause the body to accumulate toxins (ama) and cause additional imbalances. For instance, milk and fruit—especially sour fruits—should not be combined. Yoga says that the simplest diet is the healthiest for both the body and the mind. For this reason, individuals who practice yoga are advised to adhere to a sattvic diet.

A clean vegetarian diet known as sattvik bhojan consists of entire grains, legumes, sprouts, fresh fruit in season, a lot of fresh vegetables, dried nuts, seeds, honey, fresh herbs, milk, and dairy products free of animal products. These meals elevate our consciousness or sattva. Cooked and consumed with love, gratitude, and mindfulness is Sattvic Bhojan. A Sattvik has a balanced personality, is calm, tranquil, serene, friendly, and full of vitality, enthusiasm, health, hope, and aspirations. Sattvic bhojan also has the added benefit of being a very successful weight loss technique and helping to maintain a healthy weight. When sattvic bhojan is deep-fried, overprocessed, or stored for an extended length of time, it turns tamasic.

What makes rajasic and tamasic foods bad for your body?

Ayurveda

Foods like eggs, tea, coffee, bread products, and alcohol that are highly flavorful and cause excessive excitation are known as Rajasic foods. These foods are all rajasic in nature since they all excite the nervous system. This diet prohibits the consumption of foods originating from animals. Foods that have been chemically or biologically modified, processed foods, or dead foods (meat, fish, etc.) are not allowed in a vegetarian diet. Foods that are reheated, stale, or overcooked are categorized as tamasic. Apart from that, since packaged food loses some of its freshness and nutritional value, it is not advised.

To sum up, the unheard importance of a Sattvik diet in yoga lies in its ability to create a pure environment for physical, mental, and spiritual growth. As we tackle the complexities of modern life, the ancient wisdom rooted in a Satvik diet beckons us to rediscover the profound connection between what we consume and the path to overall well-being. Understand the unheard, and let the purity of Satvik living harmonize your journey toward a more balanced and enlightened existence.

A sattvic diet generally consists of:

fresh, organic fruit and vegetables
whole grains and nuts
dairy products such as milk and ghee
beans and lentils
plant-based oils
mildly sweet foods (natural, unrefined sugars), honey, molasses
spices such as cinnamon, basil, coriander, ginger and turmeric

My journey with India Yoga School in Goa (Mandrem) has been nothing short of life changing. I’ve been practicing here for almost a year now, and every single day on the mat has deepened my understanding of yoga—not just as a physical practice, but as a way of living. What truly makes this place special are the teachers. Achita and Shivansh are not just incredibly knowledgeable, but also deeply grounded, warm, and genuinely present with every student. Their guidance goes beyond instruction they create a safe and nurturing space where you feel seen, supported, and encouraged to grow at your own pace. I initially came here to explore yoga more deeply, but the experience has been far richer than I ever imagined. The Hatha classes, especially with mantra chanting, bring such a beautiful balance of strength, stillness, and devotion. There’s something incredibly powerful about beginning or ending practice with sound it shifts your entire inner state. The aerial yoga sessions have also been an absolute joy. They bring playfulness into the practice while still building strength, awareness, and trust in your body. It’s rare to find a place that balances discipline and lightness so effortlessly. For anyone considering yoga teacher training, I wholeheartedly recommend their 200 hours teacher training as well as their Aerial TTC. The depth of knowledge, the authenticity of teaching, and the environment they cultivate make it a truly enriching experience whether you want to teach or simply deepen your personal practice. Being a student here has been a journey of self-discovery, discipline, and inner connection. This school is not just about learning postures it’s about understanding yoga in its true essence. Grateful to be part of this space in Goa. ????

I’ve attended a few drop in hatha classes here with Shivansh. I have enjoyed how he weaves mantra into class, and his energy in holding space that makes class both effective and enjoyable. The reminder to be present and the Inclusion of ancient teachings and Sanskrit throughout class is really wonderful. Thank you ????

I was here for a 4 day yoga retreat with my friend, and we both loved it and wished we could stay longer.! The teaching is very professional, yet delivered in a relaxed and easy going manner. The bed is one of the most comfortable I’ve slept in in India, and the food was delicious.! I can not really fault the retreat and the structure.. There was plenty of free time to do your own thing, or just chill by the pool or beach and plenty of amazing yoga in the morning and evening.. we are leaving very content, and definitely would love to return ???? Thank you!! Eva and Simon

I recently completed a 1-week Yoga Teacher Training at India Yoga School in Goa, and it was truly a transformative experience. The training was intensive and ran throughout the day, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in the learning process. In just one week, I was introduced to Aerial Yoga, Hatha Yoga, Ashtanga Vinyasa, Pranayama, and Meditation - with both theory and practical sessions covered in depth. The teachers were knowledgeable, patient, and deeply rooted in authentic yogic principles. I appreciated how beautifully the course balanced physical practice with philosophy and breathwork. The hands-on guidance helped me build confidence not only in my personal practice but also in my teaching skills. Beyond the asanas, I gained deeper clarity about breath awareness, alignment, and the philosophy behind the practice. The learning environment was supportive and encouraging, making it easy to ask questions, explore, and grow. A special mention to Shivansh and Archita. Shivansh for his wonderful Yoga Philosophy and Hatha Yoga classes - energetic, heartfelt, and enriched with meaningful explanations of each topic, beautifully supported by principles of physics. Archita is incredibly experienced when it comes to asanas, she notices every detail and helps you improve with kindness, patience, and encouragement. And finally, the food was amazing - healthy, delicious, and always adaptable to individual needs, which made the entire experience even more nourishing. I am truly grateful for this journey and would highly recommend this school to anyone looking to deepen their yoga practice or teaching path. Thank you for such a beautiful learning experience :)
